Pruitt backs federal funding for Great Lakes cleanup

Scott Pruitt, the nation’s top environmental officer, said he endorses continued federal funding for a landmark cleanup of the Great Lakes — a departure from the Trump administration’s budget proposal, which would essentially kill the project. Pruitt’s support follows a vote in the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, which recently passed legislation that would preserve the $300 million annual funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Flint council delays water decision another month

Talks to determine Flint's long-term water source have been delayed another month by the the Flint City Council. At a meeting on July 19, the council voted 7-1 to postpone deciding whether to approve a 30-year deal with the Great Lakes Water Authority. A top aide to Gov. Rick Snyder said that Flint's indecision on a long-term water source costs more than a half million-dollars each month.

Groups sue to have Lake Erie declared 'impaired'

Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Toledo, seeking to have the open waters of Lake Erie declared "impaired" under the provisions of the Clean Water Act. The lawsuit essentially seeks to overturn the U.S. EPA's decision to approve a declaration by the Ohio EPA that the open waters of the lake are not impaired. Michigan, however, has declared that the lake is impaired.
