City to
test soil for more onland irrigation sites
The NY Mills City
Council has authorized its maintenance department to conduct soil
testing for the purpose of finding additional sites for onland
irrigation.
The authorization
comes as no surprise as the city has been involved in an ongoing
struggle to find additional outlets for its treated wastewater.
The clay-like soil in the immediate area is part of the problem as
it does not soak up water as does the more sandy-type soil closer
to Perham.
Past discussions
have included suggestions that the city discharge wastewater in an
area near Willow Creek west of NY Mills. Concern arose that the
discharge would go into the creek and eventually make its way to
Rush Lake.
Since then city
officials have been waiting for final results of tests being done
by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that would determine
what contamination, if any, would be caused by a relatively small
discharge of treated wastewater in an area near Willow
Creek.
The city has
primarily used online irrigation as a way to discharge treated
wastewater.
