Bacteria
level high at beach
Duluth News Tribune
- 8/13
A
sign advising against swimming or water contact was posted at
the Grand Marais city campground because of high fecal coliform
and E. coli bacteria levels, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
said Tuesday.
Meanwhile
Tuesday, the advisory sign placed last week at the Duluth Boat
Club Landing on the bay side of Park Point was taken down.
A
number of factors can contribute to higher fecal and E. coli bacteria
levels, including pet droppings, children in diapers, birds, sewer
line overflows, leaking septic systems and rainwater runoff that
carries fecal matter on beaches and docks into the water.
In
the Grand Marais campground, there was considerable wave action
on the day of sampling, which redistributed the particles on the
bottom of the harbor. That could be a potential source of the
bacteria. Signs could come down as early as this afternoon.
