63rd
Street Beach
closed to swimmers
Chicago Tribune
- 7/31
Swimming was prohibited at a South Side beach
Wednesday because of high bacteria levels.
The Chicago Park District closed 63rd Street
Beach to swimming at midday after test results from water samples
taken Tuesday indicated that E. coli bacteria levels were too
high for safety, a district spokesman said.
E. coli bacteria, while not necessarily dangerous itself, can
indicate the presence of other harmful bacteria.
Water samples taken Wednesday will yield results
by midday Thursday that will show whether the ban can be lifted.
Although people may not enter the water at
63rd Street, the beach itself is open.
