for
industrial cleanup
Chicago Tribune

The
Lake County Board awarded $271,000 in state grants Tuesday to
North Chicago, Waukegan and Park City to clean up industrial pollution
from areas slated for commercial development.
North
Chicago intends to use two grants totaling $124,000 to clean up
areas on Sheridan Road between 18th and 21st Streets that are
being converted to two commercial developments.
Waukegan
will use its $75,000 grant to clean up property near the shuttered
Outboard Marine Corp. on the Lake Michigan shore between Municipal
Beach and the North Shore Sanitary District's wastewater-treatment
plant. Officials said they hope to convert the property to a public
beach.
Park
City officials intend to use the community's $72,000 grant to
clean up an area southeast of Washington Street and Teske Boulevard,
which also is slated for commercial development.
The
county still has $50,000 in grants from the Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency available until Aug. 31.
