Water
mains to be moved
for Wal-Mart expansion
South Bend Tribune
- 5/29
The
planned expansion of Wal-Mart to a Super Center will mean a couple
of existing water mains there will have to be moved.
Chris
Johnsen, Plymouth water department superintendent, told the Water
Board of Trustees on Tuesday night at its regularly scheduled
meeting, that mains on the north and the south sides of the building
at U.S. 30 and Oak Road will need to be moved further away from
the existing building to accommodate the expansion.
Johnsen
said 8-inch mains already are in use at the retailer. With their
movement, the city will get new easements and Wal-Mart building
contractors will perform the placement of the mains according
to city specifications. The retailer also will post a $48,500
bond with the clerk-treasurer, and include legal descriptions
of the affected parcels. A deed of both easements will be given
to the city.
Water
service is not expected to be disrupted to the retailer, nor to
its business neighbors during the transition, Johnsen said.
Johnsen
also told the board that the Indiana Department of Transportation's
work on Indiana 17 is once again back on schedule, which means
his department can coordinate placement of water hydrants and
some water mains in connection with the work.
Johnsen
said InDOT expects the work to be completed "between Blueberry
Festivals" this year and next. Johnsen said bids are expected
to be let sometime in July. The city's expenses in conjunction
with the work will be just under $176,000, he said, meaning it
is less than the $231,000 budgeted for the project.
