The Groundwater Foundation is now accepting applications for Groundwater University 2004, a summer camp program for junior high and high school students interested in the environment.  Students from across the United States between the ages of 12 and 15 may apply.  Up to 20 students will be selected to participate.  The hands-on event provides students with an opportunity to learn about a variety of groundwater and related natural resources topics while being introduced to careers in the environmental field.

Groundwater University faculty include professional hydrologists, chemists, irrigation experts, well drillers and geologists from government agencies, private water testing laboratories, universities and colleges, and municipal water systems.

A few of the fun activities planned for students at this summer’s event include:

• Meeting students from other states and making new friends
• Constructing mini groundwater models
• Hiking the Platte River and digging down to the water table
• Field trips to monitoring wells, streams, and lakes to collect and test various water samples
• Working with high-tech equipment like handheld GPS units
• Building leadership and group skills with individual and team projects
• Barbeque cook-outs, skits, games, crafts, paddle boats, and swimming

This year’s event will be held June 15-17, 2003 at Platte River State Park located between Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska. Applications for Groundwater University are now being accepted. The cost for participation in Groundwater University is $175.  This fee includes meals and lodging. Limited scholarships are available.
