City considers
reservoir options
Chicago Tribune2/14
Park
Ridge aldermen have directed city staff to begin negotiating with
the Park District for use of park property to hold a new underground
water reservoir.
At
a special meeting Wednesday night, aldermen identified two options
they liked for putting the 10 million-gallon reservoir at Busse
Highway and Elm Street under Hinkley Park. The site is currently
occupied by a Park District maintenance facility.
City
officials are expected to make a formal presentation to the Park
Ridge Recreation and Park District Board on Thursday.
The
City Council in December designated a former public works site
at 1200 W. Elm St. for the reservoir. The city owns the site and
leases it to Nicor, which is leaving this year. City officials
said a reservoir and pumping station at Hinkley Park would cost
an estimated $17.7 million, or about $1.5 million to $2 million
less than at 1200 W. Elm St.
Options
being considered by the city include a land swap with the Park
District, allowing it to take over 1200 W. Elm St. or building
the Park District a new maintenance facility on top of the reservoir.
That maintenance center would cost the city $2.2 million but would
allow it to sell the Elm Street property to a developer.
The
downtown reservoir has a capacity of 8 million gallons and requires
about $8 million in repairs. Moving the reservoir will give the
city added capacity to meet future water needs.
