City,
Hills may make water deal
Brunswick Sun -
2/13
Brunswick
city council and Brunswick Hills trustees are in the process of
negotiating what could be a landmark deal between the neighboring
jurisdictions notorious for their age-old disputes over water
and annexation.
Officials
from the two communities have been meeting regularly for the past
year to discuss the beautification of the Pearl Road corridor
from Boston Road to the Medina Township line. Until Friday, they
hadn't gotten very far in their negotiations, mainly because the
topics of water and annexation had been avoided.
When
council and the trustees met last week, however, they laid both
subjects on the table and ended up walking away from the meeting
in agreement that they were one step closer to working out an
arrangement in which township businesses located along Pearl Road
would have access to city water without having to annex to the
city.
"These
issues (water and annexation) have been hanging like a dark cloud
over Brunswick and Brunswick Hills for so many years now,"
Jack Schira, township trustee, said during the meeting. "What
we have to decide now is if we are ready to say water without
annexation."
Officials
from both communities agreed that improving the Pearl Road corridor
and developing a strict set of development guidelines and zoning
codes for the area is such an important project that they are
both willing to give a little if it means the betterment of the
overall community.
