Buried worker rescued

Frankfort Daily Southtown - 1/7

A man who was buried in dirt up to his waist while working on a sewer line had to be dug out by Frankfort Fire Protection District firefighters Monday afternoon.

The man was working on a sewer line near Huntsmore Drive and Highland Road when part of the ground around the line collapsed about 4 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Jim Aire said.

Other workers on the site tried to free him, but had to call the fire district for help, Aire said. Firefighters used plywood to shore up part of the sewer line to prevent a further collapse and used shovels to dig the man out. He was freed in a matter of minutes, Aire said.

The worker had minor injuries and was taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields for a check up, Aire said.
