Kudos

Here are some nice things our readers have e-mailed to your Crusty Editor and minions, in the order received. From the very beginning (seven years ago!) to the latest at the bottom. Thanks to all, you make it worthwhile!

Our newsletter used to be named the SoCal Water Resources News (or SCWRN, as you will see below) but now covers all of California as the California Water News (CWN).

Some of the more fulsome praise rightly belongs to LSS Jennifer -- and no, I won't say what LSS stands for -- who prepares the draft newsletter most days from her secret bastion on an island off the South Carolina coast.  Really.  I' m not making this up!

  • "Ken: Thanks for the news articles. I normally see them in the paper, but this gives me a copy here, no cutting/pasting, and I can selectively keep the relevant ones."

  • "Ken: I am enjoying the articles you forward, as I do not have the time to look for them myself. Please continue! Thanks for including me."

  • "Hey, what a great idea! I like it. Keep up the good work. Thanks for adding my name."

  • "I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your filtering the articles for all us water wonks. I find myself reading almost every article you post. Good show!"

  • "I am enjoying your water news—it is a GREAT way to keep in touch with the water biz."

  • "I find your service extraordinarily helpful in my research and publications (three books and scores of articles) on the history of water in the American West and, particularly, California."

  • "Haven't taken the time before to thank you for the H2O news. I look forward to it each day."

  • "A day without the SoCal News is like living in a dungeon! Bleak, damp, and very uninteresting. I am addicted. I miss it even when it does come!"

  • "I really appreciate your news service. On busy days, I can quickly scan the news for hot topics. On not-so-busy days, I can catch up on some of the stories since you continue to include them for several days. And your editorial comments are informative, on point, and delightfully clever. Good job!"

  • "Thank you, Ken. I'm impressed already, and it's only my first day. Imagine what I'll think a week from now!"

  • "I really like your newsletter! I will be sure to check out each issue. It is exactly what I need to keep in touch with SoCal. "

  • "Thank you very much for the valuable resource you provide for us!"

  • "Your service continues to be of great value. In writing a Board Memo on the recent CALFED agreement, I was able to download the articles and op ed pieces on the story from newspapers across California, providing my Board with an understanding of the diversity of views and opinions on the topic. Without what you are doing, this would have been virtually impossible to do within the timeframe with which I had to develop the Board memo."

  • "Ken, I will be retiring, but I would like to stay tuned into what's going on, and your info is the best way I can think of doing it.   My personal e-mail is . . ."

  • "Great link to DHS and coastal and beaches section. Before, I had the Wall Street Journal to look forward to in the morning (early) - now I have the SCWRN to stretch it out. Your efforts are fantastic - THANKS!"

  • "I sent you a note yesterday and today I get the first newsletter.  Thank you!  I can see why my waterlogged associates talk about your newsletter.  Amazing!"

  • "I wanted to thank you for keeping the 'environmentalist' articles as part of your media source. You have compiled an exhaustive and neutral forum that is very important for the general public, the water industry, and practitioners and environmentalists alike. I visit the site habitually and realized that I have never thanked you for job well done."

  • "Keep up the SCWRN — we at LADWP love it!"

  • "Thank you for your great work.  I enjoy the daily information.  Keep it up!"

  • "Thanks Ken.  What did I used to do without this information?  Sure makes life easier!"

  • "I can't imagine a better marketing tool than your company's genuine public service — the invaluable and timely clippings you send out to the water-concerned community.  And, your providing an important forum for relevant commentary is also greatly appreciated.  Many thanks!"

  • "I'm thankful for Ken Harlow and all the information he so generously shares daily with all of us.  Happy Thanksgiving, gentle one, and do shine on."

  • "I am glad resources are available for someone to link all the water, wastewater articles in one place. I spend about two hours twice a week surfing the web trying to locate articles on these issues. The press and their comments are important to my job and being able to find the articles in one place is very helpful. Thanks for your efforts, they are appreciated!"

  • (Written to others) "I have found SoCal Water Resources News to be most helpful in keeping up with this fast-moving field. The 'clippings' are gathered from links to newspapers throughout the area. And, all points of view are fairly represented."

  • "You and your team do a marvelous job on SCWRN, with a wonderful sense of humor.  Your work is greatly appreciated by me and many others.  Thank you for the valuable service you provide."

  • "Thank you for the news letter you send every day.  It is a pleasure to work with.  My boss has me print out the recaps then marks the articles he wants more information on.  In comparison to the other news letters we get, it is by far the most user friendly.  I know my boss finds the material useful and he is always interested in the list of new readers."

  • "Ken, thanks for your transmittals.  I especially like your quick lighthearted humor that you include every now and then.  It is nice to bring a slight smile, bit of a smile, or a light chuckle. Thanks!"

  • "Ken, just want you to know I think your doing a great job -- you really go way out for us and I appreciate the extra work.  I look forward to your email every day and the little notes you attach for us.  Your humor is AWESOME.  Keep up the good work. . ."

  • "Thank you for the wonderful job you've done in getting water information out to us.  Your service is invaluable.  Hope you continue to grow in readership and influence.  May the water in your cup always be from the Colorado. . .or SWP or DWR or. . .just make sure MWD has a piece of the action!!!"

  • "Hello Ken -- I want to thank you very much for your continued efforts to provide this valuable service to the industry.  I have personally found it to be quite valuable as I am sure many of the readers have told you.  This has been exemplary to say the least.  Thank you and I look forward to interesting reading in 2001!"

  • "Ken, Just a quick note to say 'Thank You' for the great job you do in keeping so many people informed through your daily edition of Water Resources News.  I look forward to your daily updates...and I appreciate your sense of humor.  A faithful reader..."

  • "The Southern California Water Resources News is probably the finest example of public relations as a public service that I have seen in the water industry — and I've been a keen observer and participant in it for more than four decades."

  • "Ken and Paul, I truly enjoy my morning wake up call from you two.  I not only find the editorials to be very informative (even though some of them give me heartburn), your sense of humor and commentary set me straight like a double shot of milk of magnesia. You guys don't get paid enough. Keep up the good work!"

  • "Thanks Ken. . .I'm sure you hear it all the time, but I want to join the fan club and again tell you what a great job and service you do for all of us water babies out here in the jungle.  I just know it's a huge job and want you to know it's really appreciated."

  • "I don't know how you actually do this service, but please keep it up.  The service, besides being an excellent source of news and information, has also become a very important communication tool (I am referring to the "Spout Off" section here) within the broader water/wastewater community at a time when polemic sometimes gets in the way of traditional forms of communication.  Thanks again for the great work and the valuable resource."

  • "Thanks very much for all you time and effort in putting this newsletter together. I retired two years ago as GM of this Water District and now find I can keep up-to-date on all SoCal water issues through your efforts. It allows me to continue to communicate with the new GM and existing Board members and remain fully informed......even more so than some without email who are still working."

  • "This news list has become one of the best things in the water business. I hope people recognize the service you have done for us. It is a great thing."

  • "The news info you provide is a great resource. Besides being a part of a award winning water/wastewater agency, I also, teach water/wastewater technology courses for our local community colleges in the San Diego area. The information you provide to me is used in both areas. Thanks, again."

  • "What a great resource! Thanks for providing this for all of us!"

  • "Thanks for slaving away, Ken. It's a very interesting newsletter, a wonderful resource!"

  • "Keep up the good work!  Did you have any idea that your creation would become such a big deal? I enjoy the incredible amount of information you put in one easily accessible location."

  • "Keep up the good work. You are are really producing a first-rate, VERY useful product!"

  • "Thanks so much for the great newsletter! I get my water-nerd fix everyday thanks to you..."

  • "Having tried many, this is one of the few news services I have kept and continue to use regularly. Keep up the good work!"

  • "GREAT JOB! Your topic headings are very appropriate and efficient for me. I find the format easy to scan for my topics of interest for the day or week."

  • "This is a great service. Many thanks for your initiative."

  • "I am impressed with . . . both the daily update and the web page. I receive between 300 and 400 emails a day — many of which I wish I had time to review in more depth. With your current format I can scan your daily offering for those items of interest, log into my brain those items that may stimulate more interest or attention, and broadcast to others those items that warrant my shining a light."

  • "I subscribe to a lot of newsletters and your newsletter is perfect. I can breeze over the topics that I need more info. print them out and continue my day. I read it every morning and have shared with all of my peers."

  • "Ken, as a member of [deleted] I find your News Letter an absolute Must Read for all who are interested in our worlds number one commodity, Water, and a tool for me when developers come to our little corner of the world with their overwhelming water consuming projects. I like your news letter just the way it is: "Full of Vital Information." Keep up the great work of keeping us updated and maybe between all of us we can save a little of what's left of our precious environment. Thanks for the great service."

  • "It is great that you continue to strive to make this fantastic service even better."

  • "Your newsletter does a real service to the water industry."

  • "I've come to rely on SCWRN on a daily basis.  I don't know what I'd do without it."

  • "I love the SCWRN and hope you continue this valuable service."

  • "I find the SCWRN very informative and helps keep me up-to-date at one stop, without having to research numerous resources."

  • "I find the SCWRN to be a valuable resource, not only to keep up with the goings on in the newspapers, but as a great way to link up with other agencies and web sites. Keep up the great work!"

  • "I've been in the water industry for over twenty years and there's never been so many issues challenging us as now. Your news sheet has been a wonderful asset in this new time. . ."

  • "I think you do a great service and that your daily email is terrific. I can't imagine how you could improve it."

  • "This is the greatest tool. I liked it when you first cranked it up and as it has evolved. Now I know the name Brown and Caldwell as one of the finest engineering firms around. I believe the advertising is well worth the effort. Thanks for providing this for us."

  • "Thanks for your SPUNKY writing style.....Seeing your personable greeting to 'all of us out there' is a GREAT way to start the day. Just want to let you know your efforts are appreciated & don't go unnoticed."

  • "Thank you so much for the innovative feature of having news stories open in a separate window. When one is speeding through the news with limited time available, this is such a timesaver and so convenient. Thank you for thinking of these little touches for your readers."

  • "I like the way the news letter keeps a couple of past days' material, so if I miss a day, I don't have to click on the old e-mail. And, of course, I like the light hearted format, from the trivia at the intro, to the editorial comments throughout. Thanks for a great job!"

  • "Please know that I greatly value your newsletter and your wit. I even enjoy the wry wit of those troublemaking guest editors when you're out on your scooter."

  • "A new highlight to the start of my day is the great daily e-mail & hyperlink to the SCWRN! Many thanks for ALL you & your staff do to keep us ALL connected!!!! I also love how you connect us to the noteworthy dates & celebrated people (past & present) in the world."

  • "Ken -- I shifted my subscription over to AOL so have been receiving SCWRN. If it is not there it is like a day without coffee! Keep up the great service. A fantastic marketing tool for B&C - great idea. Congratulations!"

  • "I'm assuming that the really good looking one in the photo is Ken. I have never met hog named 'Ken' or one who was an editor to such a hot page either!!  Quite a feat!  I'm not sure whom to thank for the page, B&C for supporting it, or you guys, Ken and Paul.... but this will really cut down on the reading that I do here. What a fabulous site. Where o' where have you been? I know how much work this will save me, so I know how much you guys must put into it. Thanks, lots and even more."

  • "Ken:  Having just struggled through a couple other "water newsletters" I am impressed (once again) at the excellence of the design and user mechanics of the SoCal Water Resources News. It works beautifully to provide a quick overview of the day's water news, and guides the user seamlessly to more comprehensive coverage of items of special interest."

  • "Just writing to say, if I haven't before, that besides the news, your website is among the easiest to use I have encountered. Good work!"

  • "This gives me the opportunity to tell you what a wonderful service you provide. I hope it has resulted in good things for you (like more business). You also provide a good networking service. I often hear someone say something like 'Did you see on the Brown and Caldwell that so and so is now at so and so.'"

  • "To Ken Harlow and all his Minions.... who have provided yet another year of wonderful value-added work, so that the rest of us could take it easy and just sit back with a cup of coffee every morning..... HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY 2002. Keep the water (news) flowing, Dear Crusty Old Editor and Staff. Thank you again."

  • "Just want you to know that we REALLY APPRECIATE your newsletter and the concise manner in which it is presented."

  • "Thank you. We are expanding out Water H20 Project and will include your information for research, in every subject, by K-12 students across the US. We are also modifying the Project for use by parents and home schools. Your link will be on the Water Expert Lesson in our portfolio. Appreciate the relevant, real life information."

  • "Just want you to know that we REALLY APPRECIATE your newsletter and the concise manner in which it is presented."

  • "Dear Ken: I just wanted you to know that I truly appreciate your kind comments and the delightful insight you give at the opening of each day's distribution. Your words are an inspiration to me...it's a great way to start the day!"

  • "Ken: I want to say that I appreciate your good humor early in the morning, every morning!  You make my day!"

  • "Thank you so much for this newsletter. It is a big help to me to find out what is going on in the state in the Water Quality world."

  • "Ken: I just want to thank you for the SoCal Water Resources News. I look forward to the daily information. I will be relocating to Southern California in a week or so. I will be using this news to find contacts for a job in the water industry and also for general knowledge of California's water news.  Thanks again!"

  • "Your firm's bcwaternews is simply outstanding.  A friend forwarded an e-mail that included the link to it, and I was hooked. It's the best summary of what's going on in a particular industry/region I've seen. Thanks to your firm for making this available. (I also enjoy the light-hearted lead-ins from the editor.)"

  • "Crisp comments, sharp wit, and focused content -- you three get the morning going better than a large espresso!"

  • "Ken, [my company] is a recent subscriber. Just want to provide some brief feedback: "Fantastic." As "water" can be dry (pun intended), you and your colleagues perform a great job at providing a comprehensive overview of water news with a positive "need to know" spin. Kudos additionally to BC for the value-added service."

  • "Thank you for publishing SCWRN. It is a great help in keeping on top of what is going on in water."

  • "I value your publication as a great service. Keep up the good work."

  • "As always, your readers appreciate the hard work that goes into BC Water News. Thanks for making my life easier."

  • "I enjoy your publication and have gained much valuable information about water and sewer. Keep up the good work…"

  • "Thanks for the information you disseminate. I appreciate it."

  • "Keep up the good work with your newsletter. It has proven invaluable for keeping informed with the water industry."

  • "Ken, many thanks to you and BC for providing this exceptional service. I never miss my issue of SCWRN."

  • "I want to let you know how much I appreciate the time you take to keep us updated. It has been a pleasure reading your Newsletters."

  • "Water is probably the most important subject the world has to deal with. No, it's the most important, and your publication is a "must read."

  • "I very much appreciate your daily humor and insight. From my point of view, you've generated tremendous good will with your work."

  • "I've been a loyal reader of SCWRN for a couple years and have enjoyed your humor and the useful information you provide. Thank you and keep up the good work."

  • "Thanks, Ken, for the years of service. The true value in your effort is the news prep and presentation itself. You have saved me hundreds of hours over the past four years."

  • "As a gentle personal reader, I appreciate the earnest effort that you and your firm have put into this through the years. I moved back to California three years ago and have found the newsletter invaluable in letting me keep up to date on what I did already know about, and in learning about new exciting progress in the contentious, but always needed and relevant, world of water."

  • "I wanted to mention that I used your website in almost every class session during my spring 2003 Water Resources class here at Santiago Canyon College. The students had a site to go to for job postings, water news, and links to water districts and governmental agencies. Please keep the web page going just as it is. Thanks much.

  • "Hi Ken, Just a note to commend you and your fine staff on the great job you do in informing the world on the most precious commodity we have, that 'Liquid Gold.'  Keep up the great work as SoCal Water Resources News supplies us novices with the ammo we need to face those factions that think California has all the water it will ever need."

  • "Your newsletter is wonderful. I read it faithfully every day. The humorous touch adds to it…thanks! I find the SCWRN to be a great resource of water news, CA and beyond. No changes needed."

  • "Ken - I feel deprived and unappreciated if I can't start my workday with a cup of coffee and the SCWRN. You guys do an excellent job of what I lamely used to try to do myself (Google searches for "California water," "LADWP," "MWD," "Salton Sea" etc. etc. etc.). Thanks so much for providing the service and keeping us all "in the water loop."

  • "You are doing a great job. The SCWRN keeps me in touch of what's going on in the water industry. Thank you very much."

  • "Hello Ken. Your SoCal Water Resources News keeps me current and gives insight on water issues beyond the Los Angeles Basin. I always want to know more, rather than less about a subject. Thanks to you I can accomplish this expeditiously. I'm not aware of a similar news summary based on other medium."

  • "Love it!!! I look forward to finding out what is new every day. Also enjoy the SE edition. What a great service!. Puts B&C high on the radar screen. Hope corporate sponsorship and recognition of its contribution continues for many years. The personal dedication of the staffers and originators is most appreciated. Good job."

  • "Ken: I read the newsletter everyday. You folks are doing an excellent job. It is a valuable service you provide us. I'm not even in the water business and I find the information and articles most interesting and helpful. It keeps everyone up-to-date on important issues. Thank you and keep up the good work."

  • "Ken - Keep up the terrific work! I see the subject-matter content has expanded (several months ago). I am glad you keep previous days'-worth of news available for a while, sometimes I might look at 3-5-days worth of news, other times almost daily. Usually I am in a hurry, and go straight to the news headlines, and scan for what I believe supports my efforts, sometimes just looking for another angle on some news I had already seen or heard, and usually finding all sorts of important news not yet seen or heard. Photo pic is insightful. A very valuable resource."

  • "I want to congratulate you on the work you are doing in getting information out to workers and decision makers in the water industry. After six years as an elected public official of the [deleted] Board of Directors and four years as a Director of the [deleted] Institute, I find your publication an invaluable source of what is going on in the water industry. I do go to some ACWA and AWWA meetings, but your publication describes the nitty-gritty transactions that are defining what is going to happen in the future."

  • "To tell the truth, one of my favorite features about the newsletter are the occasional comments you make on the headlines. I greatly enjoy your sense of humor. Keep up this great service."

  • "Ken; I can't believe this brainchild of yours was such a great idea. I remember you talking about it, and now it is read all over (like the nun that fell off her skateboard). Everywhere I go, people know about your newsletter. I liked it better when it was "just us irreverent" types and we could "spout off".

  • "Thank you for making my job easier. I e-mail out a daily water news digest to other employees here at [deleted] District. It always includes a few links from your terrific California Water News. I appreciate your effort to keep us informed in a simple, usable format."

  • "This is a terrific and useful service that you provide to those of us in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Thank you for your time and effort in keeping us up to date!"

  • "Ken: 1,000 thanks for the topical water news information you provide each day, it is an invaluable resource to many, many water professionals. And thanks for your 3,000 Mile Bike Trip photos, they were spectacular. Looking at them reminds me that I haven't taken any time off yet this year. What a great set of pics, you must have had a great time! Thanks for a job well done!"

  • "Ken: First of all, I'd like to thank you and your staff at Brown and Caldwell for putting out the California Water News. In addition to being useful to me in my role as the Safety and Risk Manager at [deleted], and as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor in the Water/Wastewater Technology Program at [deleted] College, your site is a wonderful resource for my students who are trying to learn about the water and wastewater industry and about the most current emerging issues. In fact, I usually spend the first 15-20 minutes of each class session discussing "current events", raising the student's awareness about how much issues in our industry impact each of us every day. Kudos for providing this valuable service. I've been a daily reader for the past couple of years have always found your website and articles to be the most comprehensive collection of timely information about what's going on in our industry. Thanks for everyone's hard work and for the valuable service you provide to us free of charge. In today's world, your firm's commitment is a refreshing respite from the "let's figure out how we can make a buck on this idea" mentality that unfortunately permeates our society."

  • "Ken and Jennifer: I can't tell you how important the role that BC's Water News is to those of us in the industry. For example, since virtually all of the articles from the San Diego area papers ALWAYS portray Metropolitan as the 'bad guy' vis-à-vis their ongoing "issues" with the San Diego County Water Authority, it's important to read what the LA area media has to say on the other side of the issues. In addition to working full time for a local water agency, I also teach courses in the Water and Wastewater Technology program at the local community college. Since no textbook could ever keep pace with everything that's currently going on in the water and wastewater field, I strongly encourage my students to subscribe to Water News in lieu of requiring them to purchase a book for my Fundamentals of Water/Wastewater 101 course. We usually spend the first 25-30 minutes of each class session discussing current events, and the bulk of the information comes from your newsletters. Thanks, and keep up the good work. It's a real service to the industry and the public we serve."

  • "Hi Jennifer. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy browsing through your newsletter. You do a great job! I like the lightness of the quotes and birthdays...in contrast to the serious, "heavy" topics portraying the intensity, politics and/or time factors burdening water resources. I am amazed that you DAILY meet the core purpose of your newsletter: To send relevant, topical news to a wide variety of folks working or interested in water. Congratulations on putting out a great resource. I really appreciate it, and you, Jennifer, for doing it so well. Have a great day!"

  • "Ken:  I want to thank you for all of your work on the BC News. I always check it and learn something new each time.   I appreciate your contribution to our industry. • "Ken:  Just a quick note to say Thank You for The Water News. As a subscriber of several years, I compliment you for all the hard work and effort in publishing this news-mail. It makes my day! I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and respect for all involved in the water and wastewater industry. You are a big reason as to why. Again, Thank You!"

  • "Jennifer/Crusty Editor (Ken): Thanksgiving 2005. Your initial idea of keeping us informed is still a viable idea. I would like to thank you and your bosses at BC for allowing you to continue to be the leading group keeping us informed on important water issues. So many of us depend on this venue. I would like to express my continued support and thanks for keeping this GREAT newsletter going."

  • "Just a quick note to tell you how much I enjoy receiving BC Water News. I’m a new 'gentle reader' and am thrilled to see how much of the human touch is evident in your online publication. Reading and learning about toxic cleanups and flood control is not only informative, but entertaining as well. Who knew that? Thanks again for sharing water-related info in such a professional yet 'personal' manner."

  • "Ken, I may have said this before but thanks for your diligent work in compiling this daily news summary on water issues. Today, as has happened before, I found a my lecture topic popping up in a news story (in an outlet I certainly would not have seen otherwise). This let's me bring the technical material in my classes to a level that makes it relevant and more engaging, both for me and the students. Plus, including important topics like global warming allows me to include the larger context for water management, especially for a state as vulnerable as California. Including more politically charged aspects of water helps avoid having engineers thinking their work is somehow neutral or beyond the gritty political world, which is also something I like sharing with the students. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!"
