State water levels high (Stockton Record, 7/6) "Water may not be raining from the skies, but there is more than enough of it in the Valley." —  Water Quality Revised rule proposed for lead in drinking water (EPA, 7/6) NEWS RELEASE. "The Environmental Protection Agency plans to tighten its rules on lead. That's the gist of proposed revisions, announced today, that would affect the lead portions of the lead-and-copper rule for drinking water." —  Clean Water Act Santa Monica Baykeeper launches CWA program (Santa Monica Baykeeper, 7/6) NEWS RELEASE. "In an effort to empower citizens to take a stand for clean water, Santa Monica Baykeeper is launching a new Clean Water Act: Empower the People Program. Beginning July 19, Baykeeper will conduct a series of workshops, each one focusing on a particular water quality issue in Los Angeles County and how ordinary citizens can use the Clean Water Act to help clean up LA’s waters." —  Surface Water Feds issue salmon disaster declaration (Eureka Times Standard, 7/7) "Still mulling fishery failure and financial relief; only loans for now. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce declared the West Coast salmon fishery a disaster after feeling substantial pressure from fishermen, lawmakers and the governors of California and Oregon, but financial relief is still in the works." Watershed pollutants from Midwestern farms contribute to "dead zone" in Gulf of Mexico (Indiana University, 7/5) "Winter floods and spring downpours are washing large amounts of nutrients off Midwestern farms and into streams feeding the Mississippi River, according to new research led by Todd Royer, an assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. These nutrients ultimately end up in the Gulf of Mexico, where they contribute to its oxygen-starved 'dead zone.'" —  Wastewater Ontario will be flush with $26 million sewer (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, 7/7) "It stinks. As a result, a recently completed sewer extension through the city will reduce odors and save millions in maintenance and treatment upgrades, officials said." EPA forces Nogales to repair leaking sewer lines (Associated Press, 7/6) "The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has forced the city to fix a long-standing problem with sewer lines that had been leaking wastewater into the ground." Los Osos could face special election (SLO Tribune, 7/7) "If the town's voters end up deciding the fate of the services district, there wouldn't be time to place the issue on the November ballot."
