proposed sale of the Encina Generation Station will have little effect

customers from Alisal Water Corp., which was found to be in violation

water of elevated levels of bromate, a chemical thought to cause
cancer in humans, health experts told The Associated Press. "
Dam drains water quality
(SB Sun, 1/2) "The
water flowing from the rugged canyons northeast of San Bernardino was
renowned for its purity, clarity and abundance. But now, that
once-pure water resembles chocolate milk, meaning higher costs for
water suppliers and possibly higher water rates for the region's

$18 million targeted for water quality monitoring

Environmental Protection Agency announces its plans to allocate the FY
2006 increase of $18 million for national water quality monitoring.
These funds supplement an existing allocation of approximately $200

Voters in Kern County seek to block sludge
(LA Times, 1/2) " Voters
in Kern County have moved toward slamming the door on the city of Los
Angeles' practice of trucking its treated sewage sludge to farmland it
owns in the rural county, forcing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to
consider waging an expensive campaign or pony up millions more to
truck the stuff to Arizona. "
BBARWA draft EIR comment period coming to a close
(BBARWA News Release, 1/2) "Under
the provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act, the Big
Bear Area Regional Wastewater Agency is accepting comments on the
Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for their Recycled Water
Master Plan which includes the study of groundwater recharge. "
$200,000 fine for dumping
waste into L.A. sewer
(LA Times, 12/31) " A
Sun Valley aerospace company was ordered Thursday to pay more than
$200,000 in fines for illegally dumping nickel and other hazardous
waste into the Los Angeles city sewer system. "
Two contractors move to quit sewer project
(SLO Tribune, 12/31) "Two
major contractors have either terminated their contracts or begun to
withdraw their workers and equipment from the Los Osos sewer project,
citing nonpayment by the community's services district and a loss of
funding for the $150 million construction project. "
Power plant wastewater no threat, study finds
(Mercury News, 12/24) " San
Jose's environmental director found no evidence of increased health
risks from using recycled wastewater to cool Calpine's new Metcalf
power plant, according to a city staff analysis released Thursday. "
