No secret source

The planet has only so much fresh water to meet the needs of a growing world population. And global warming throws more uncertainty into the mix by increasing chances of extreme weather, such as more intense droughts in some places. There is no secret source of water of the future. Conservation is the best answer, agreed panelists at a discussion last week at the New York Academy of Sciences. Live Science

Retrofit & reuse

The city of Chula Vista could require all new homes built within city limits be graywater-ready. The method has been used for years by retrofitting pipes from baths, showers and washing machines. Chula Vista would be the first city in California to mandate that all new homes have those pipes to save water — and money. KGTV San Diego

Tugnacious

Two-thirds of California residents rely on water pumped through the Delta, as its delicate ecosystem teeters on the brink and its aging levees crumble. Planners have spent decades searching for a fix, but they'll have to finish the job without the advice of a man who's played a central role in Delta science. KQED San Francisco
