Florida water shortage warning comes as fires rage

A water shortage warning has been issued to 8.1 million residents from Orlando to the Florida Keys.

A water shortage warning has been issued to 8.1 million residents from Orlando to the Florida Keys as brush fires ravage the state. South Florida Water Management District Board Chairman Dan O'Keefe said residents' voluntary efforts will help the water supply last through the region's dry season. Meanwhile, in Tampa Bay, a desalination plant and reservoir could be the key to help that region pull through the southern state's drought.

Governor endorses Lake Okeechobee reservoir

Florida Gov. Rick Scott added some tension to the feud between the House and Senate over priority legislation Monday and endorsed Senate President Joe Negron's proposal to build a deep-water storage reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee on existing state lands to reduce the need to discharge polluted water into fragile estuaries.

No other part of the coastal United States is sinking as fast as Louisiana, according to an updated assessment of sea level rise by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. To underscore the state's crisis, its recently approved $50 billion, 50-year Master Plan aims to speed coastal restoration and wetland protection as Gov. John Bel Edwards declared Louisiana's coastal erosion an emergency.
