Legislators get 5 Lake Okeechobee reservoir plans

The Florida Legislature now has five plans, including two “best buys,” for the reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee to consider. All five plans outlined in the South Florida Water Management District report would be built almost entirely on land already owned by the state. The district and the Army Corps of Engineers are scheduled to submit a final report to the assistant secretary for Civil Works in March.


Florida on offshore oil drilling deal: Not it

Florida Gov. Rick Scott met with U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke at the airport in Tallahassee last week, yielding a declaration that Florida was “off the table” for new offshore oil drilling. The announcement brought relief to the Hurricane Irma-ravaged state but drew the ire of other coastline governors, most of whom have opposed the expanded drilling plan.
