It's been said that the wars of the 21st century may well be fought over water. Water experts say groundwater is like a savings account — something you draw on in times of need. But it needs to be replenished, and there is new evidence that so much water is being taken out, much of the world is in danger of a groundwater overdraft.


Delta water tunnel project will jack up users' bills

California's plan to build tunnels and siphon huge amounts of water from the delta will jack up costs for water users, including 3 million Bay Area residents, but farmers will be hit the hardest, according to a financial analysis released Friday, which said water suppliers and farmers would be able to handle the increased costs.

The San Diego City Council votes Tuesday on whether to generate more recycled water for thirsty residents in exchange for giving a "pass" to the city's sewage plant, which has never met federal Clean Water Act standards.
