Smokin' debate

The battle between Michigan and California continues today when they square off at a hearing over a request by the Golden State to force stricter emissions requirements on automakers than the new federal standards signed into law last month. (Detroit News)

Tidal basin opens

The San Dieguito Wetlands Restoration Project passed a milestone yesterday, when a newly dredged basin — once a World War II-era Navy dirigible landing field — was opened to the ocean's nurturing tides. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Previous cleanup projects included removing some contaminated soil, capping other areas with asphalt, and cleaning out some old ponds. KBAK

Slow progress

The community of Shafter is demanding cleanup of toxins left 20 years ago by a pesticide plant. DTSC has a final cleanup plan in draft form. The manufacturing site was abandoned in 1989, leaving a mess in the soil — including pesticides and herbicides. (KBAK Bakersfield)   VIDEO
