Shoreline plan

In an effort to avoid the Coastal Commission's denial of their coastal management plan Thursday, Solana Beach city leaders and staff plan to meet with commission staff today in a last-ditch effort to keep their plan alive. (North County Times)

Land swap

Long Beach officials agreed to a land swap with a developer that would preserve 175 acres of hotly contested urban salt marsh, some of the last remnants of a once-vibrant wetland at the mouth of the San Gabriel River. (Los Angeles Times)

A U.S. Geological Survey digital underwater camera system, referred to as the “Coral Imaging System,” is deployed in approximately 33 feet of water off Hawaii Kai in eastern Maunalua Bay. The camera helps monitor the health of coral heads. USGS

Quality checkup

Oahu's scenic Maunalua Bay is undergoing a thorough physical exam. Every five minutes, nine instruments on the ocean floor measure temperature, salinity, currents, waves, turbidity and other aspects of the water. (Honolulu Star-Bulletin)
