The Nature Conservancy, one of the nation's largest environmental groups has decided to support building a controversial new water canal around the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, becoming the first major environmental group to publicly support the project. (Sacramento Bee)

Pelican die-off

Wildlife experts are trying to figure out why sick, disoriented and bruised California brown pelicans are being found in record numbers along more than 1,000 miles of coastline. The birds, some of them dead, have been spotted from San Francisco to Baja California, Mexico. (Associated Press)

A good 50 years
MCWD recently tore down this 250,000-gallon elevated welded steel tank, built in 1958 on the former Fort Ord Army Base. This tank has been replaced by  a hydro-pneumatic station, part of an $8.5 million project that includes removal of a 1 MG concrete reservoir and replacement with a 2 MG welded steel tank.
