Meteorologists can't bet one way or the other this year because there is no warm-water El Niño or cold-water La Niña in the Pacific Ocean. El Niño can mean more rain; La Niña can mean less. This year, the ocean is La Nada — the unofficial term that means the ocean's water temperature is normal, offering no clues for forecasters and little encouragement for farmers or reservoir operators. An East Bay couple took a longer stride into the do-it-yourself green home improvement era by spending a Saturday routing gray water pipes to their garden. Now, each time they run a load of dirty clothes, the excess H2O runs through a filtering system that waters their apple, plum and lemon trees. (San Francisco Chronicle)

After her graduation from Duke University, Lisa Lurie wanted to somehow be involved in balancing human and economic needs with environmental protection. As agriculture water quality coordinator for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, she's doing just that. (Salinas Californian)
