Nuclear waste could be shipped through Stockton if a group of Fresno-area businessmen succeeds in its plan to build the state's first nuclear plant in more than two decades. Don't expect to see cooling towers rise above the farms west of Fresno anytime soon, though. (Stockton Record)

Strike three?

California, just finished with its second consecutive year of drought, might well be facing a third. If so, state authorities may be forced to impose water rationing on farmers, homes and businesses. (New York Times)

For more than half a century, the Cabazon Water District has persevered on a shoestring budget, managing by sheer grit to provide water to this hardscrabble, unincorporated community of 2,300 and a few life-sized dinosaurs near Palm Springs. A good 50 years
MCWD recently tore down this 250,000-gallon elevated welded steel tank, built in 1958 on the former Fort Ord Army Base. This tank has been replaced by  a hydro-pneumatic station, part of an $8.5 million project that includes removal of a 1 MG concrete reservoir and replacement with a 2 MG welded steel tank.
